Гавриил (евр. крепость, сила Божия) — один из ангелов в христианстве, иудаизме, а также в исламе, провозвестник и служитель Божественного всемогущества. Один из высших ангелов, именуемый архангелом в Книге Еноха. В Ветхом и Новом Завете выступает как носитель радостного благовестия и истолкователь высших откровений. Был послан к Даниилу, чтобы истолковать ему видения.
В Новом Завете Архангел Гавриил является провозвестником рождения Иоанна Крестителя (Лк 1, 8-22) и благовествует Богородице о рождении Иисуса Христа (Лк 1, 26-38).
Тип изображения традиционен для живописи середины XV века и следует иконографии аналогичной деисусной иконы из Благовещенского собора Московского Кремля. Архангел представлен в рост, в трехчетвертном повороте влево со сферой в правой руке и мерилом в левой; облачен в зеленый плащ и синий далматик.
Gabriel (in Hebrew: God’s strength and force), one of the angels of the Christian, Jewish and Islamic religions, is the messenger and servitor of the almighty. He is one of the holy angels and is referred to as an archangel in the Book of Enoch. In the Old and New Testament he shares the Good News and is the interpreter of the holy revelations. He was sent to Daniel in order to interpret his visions.
In the New Testament, the archangel Gabriel is the prophet of the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1, 8-22) and preaches the birth of Jesus Christ to Virgin Mary (Luke 1, 26-38).
The type of depiction is traditional to the 15th century icon painting and follows the iconography of the deesis icons of the Annunciation Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. The Archangel is depicted in full-length, a three-quarter turn to the left with a sphere in his right hand. He is dressed in a green cloak and a blue tunic.
