Молодая крестьянка, баюкающая младенца, укутывает его лоскутным одеяльцем, сшитым из пестрых лоскутков ситца. Лоскутное шитье – один из любимых видов народного текстиля. Узорами из мелких треугольников и ромбиков отделывали рукава рубах, верхнюю одежду.

Учился в ИАХ (1856–1862), которую окончил со званием неклассного художника 3-й степени. Академик живописи (с 1869). Работал в мозаичном отделении ИАХ (с конца 1860-х). Участник выставок: ИАХ (1864–1890), ТПХВ (1874); всемирных в Лондоне (1872), Париже (1878) и других.
Ivan Pelevin was called a genre painter of feeling. In his works, he sought to not so much reproduce definite types as convey a certain poetic feeling. This aspect of the artist s talent is well incarnated in this canvas. The ability to pinpoint the elegant in a simple peasant situation is manifested in the appetising painting of the clay pots with sparkling varnished sides, the radiant smile of the young mother and the mischievous innocence of the skittish kitten. The canvas was acquired by the Imperial Academy of Arts and frequently shown at its exhibitions.
