«Работница» Алексея Пахомова занимала одно из центральных мест в экспозиции выставки молодежного объединения «Круг художников» в 1927 году (ГРМ). Моделью Пахомову послужила его жена, работница табачной фабрики. Однако совершенно очевидно, что образ более тяготеет к типажности, нежели характеризует индивидуальность. Для этого Пахомов избирает определенные приемы, которые позволяют ему подчеркнуть монументальность, возвышенность образа. Русоволосая молодая женщина изображена поколенно. Пропорции ее тела несколько увеличены в сравнении с натурой, отчего создается впечатление, что персонажу «тесно» в рамках холста. Динамичный поворот головы и торса плавно «останавливается» торжественными ритмами складок одежды, отдаленно напоминающей одеяния персонажей фресок раннего Возрождения. Позднее Пахомов вспоминал: «Душевная ясность и чистота юности, ее стремление к благородству и возвышенному безмерно привлекательны, и я невольно подчеркивал широкий открытый взгляд, стройность и бодрость осанки, готовность к действию. Я чаще стал всматриваться в античное искусство и искусство Высокого Возрождения и все больше ценить их». (О. Ш.).

Учился в ПУТР барона А. Л. Штиглица—СВОМАС (1915–1917, 1920–1922) у М. В. Добужинского, В. И. Шухаева, С. В. Чехонина, Н. А. Тырсы, В. В. Лебедева, А. Е. Карева; в ВХУТЕМАС–ВХУТЕИН (1922–1925) у А. И. Савинова. Участник выставок с 1921. Участник "Объединения новых течений в искусстве“ (1926–1932). Член правления ЛОССХ с 1932. Работал в журналах, иллюстрировал детские книги (1920–1930-е). Преподавал в ИЖСА (1948–1973). Заслуженный деятель искусств РСФСР (1945), Лауреат Сталинской премии второй степени (1943) и Государственной премии СССР (1973), Народный художник РСФСР (1963), Действительный член АХ СССР (1964), Народный художник СССР (1971). Сталинская премия (1946) за серию литографий "Ленинград в дни войны и блокады“ (1941–1944). Золотая медаль Международной выставки в Париже (1937) за панно "Дети Страны Советов“ для Советского павильона. Жил и работал в Ленинграде.
Alexei Pakhomov’s Woman Worker (Portrait in Blue) occupied a central place at the Circle of Artists exhibition held at the Russian Museum in 1927. Although the artist’s model was his wife, a worker in a cigarette factory, the image is clearly more of a type than a concrete individual. Pakhomov utilises a number of devices to underline the monumentality and grandeur of the image. The woman with the light brown hair is depicted from the knees upwards. The proportions of her body are slightly magnified in comparison with real life, evoking the sensation that she is “cramped” within the canvas. The dynamic turn of the head and torso is halted by the solemn rhythms of the folds of her dress, remotely reminiscent of the garbs worn by the figures in early Renaissance frescoes. The artist later recalled: “Mental clarity, the purity of youth and its aspiration towards nobility and the sublime are exceedingly attractive. I unwittingly highlighted her wide-open gaze, harmonic and cheerful carriage, and readiness for action. I began to increasingly scrutinise and appraise the art of antiquity and the High Renaissance.”

Professor (1949). Author of the book About My Work (1968–1969). Member of the arts council at the “Children’s Literature” and “Artist” publishing houses. Honoured Artist of the RSFSR (1945), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1963), People’s Artist of the USSR (1971), corresponding (1958) and full (1964) member of the USSR Academy of Arts. Winner of the Stalin Prize (1946) and State Prize (1973). Awarded a major gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris (1937) for the Children of the Soviet Land panel made for the Soviet pavilion.
