В «Итальянской комедии» события происходят во времена Людовика XIV. На открытой сцене в Версальском парке актеры разыгрывают сцены из пьесы «Нескромный Полишинель». Своеобразная композиция картины полна динамики и экспрессии, силуэты фигур — причудливы и выразительны, их ритм сложен и прихотлив. Сгущенный, насыщенный колорит, эффекты освещения усиливают театральный характер действа. Мастеру блестяще удалось передать сам дух итальянской comedia dell’arte, ее яркую зрелищность и буффонаду. Бенуа Александр Николаевич1870, Санкт-Петербург – 1960, Париж
Живописец, график, театральный художник, художественный критик, теоретик и историк искусства, музейный деятель.
Вольнослушатель Императорской Академии художеств (1887-1888), затем занимался под руководством брата, Альберта Николаевича, председателя Общества русских акварелистов.
В 1890-1894 учился в Санкт-Петербургском университете. Вдохновитель, один из организаторов и главный теоретик общества "Мир искусства". Член "Союза русских художников" (1903-1910), пожизненный член "Осеннего салона" в Париже. Виднейший представитель художественной династии Бенуа.
Начал работать как театральный художник с 1900, а с 1907 и как режиссер. В 1890-1910-х много путешествовал по Европе. В 1917 - один из организаторов Комиссии по делам искусства для переговоров с Временным правительством об охране памятников искусства и старины. С 1917 - член Совета Эрмитажа. В 1918-1926 - хранитель отделения французской и английской живописи в Государственном Эрмитаже. С 1926 постоянно жил в Париже. Много работал для оформления спектаклей театров Парижа и Милана.
Главные темы работ - Россия и Франция XVIII - начала XIX века. Автор ряда серий графических произведений, в том числе "Версальской" (1905-1906), цикла композиций на исторические темы, пейзажей Петербурга и окрестностей.
Много работал в книжной графике. Оставил воспоминания.

The events in Commedia dell’ Arte take place in France during the reign of Louis XIV. The actors are performing scenes from the play The Indiscreet Punchinello on an open stage in Versailles park. The original composition of the picture is dynamic and vivid; the silhouettes of the figures are fantastical and expressive, their rhythm intricate and fanciful. The thick, rich colours and the effects of illumination intensify the theatrical nature of the scene. Benois brilliantly succeeds in conveying the spirit of an Italian commedia dell’ arte, with its bright pageantry and buffoonery. Russian Museum: From Icons to the Modern Times. The picture recalls an episode from the burlesque comedy Punchinello. On the proscenium there is the dimly - lit angular figure of an old man getting down on his knees with some difficulty before a young coquette. A harlequin purpose fully moves towards the footlights shouting witticisms and slander. The hero and trouble - maker, Punchinello, gently dances on the spot, dressed in a robe. The conceited Captain, with a sword under his coat, sneaks up indignantly. All three comment on what is happening by the use of grimaces and buffoon - like movements. The sometimes brightly blazing and sometimes gently glimmering golden, red and green colours heighten the sense of the festive magic of the scene. The world of the old, slightly naïve and farcical commedia dell' arte appeared in Benois' work in all its fascination and refined craftsmanship, an echo of majestic epochs lost forever. Studied under brother Albert Benois, at the Imperial Academy of Arts (1887-1888) and at the Faculty of Law, St Petersburg University (1890-1894). Member of the World of Art (1899; founding member), Union of Russian Artists (1903) and the Salon d'Automne (1906). Contributed to the exhibitions of the Society of Russian Watercolourists (1891-1896), Sergei Makovsky Salon (1909), International Exhibitions in Munich (1898), Rome (1911), Malmo (1914) and the Exhibitions of Russian Art in Paris (1906, 1910) and Berlin (1906). Designed for the Mariinsky Theatre, Vera Komissarzhevskaya Theatre and the Starinny Theatre in St Petersburg, Moscow Arts Theatre, Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Ida Rubinstein Ballet Company, Teatro Real de Madrid, Theatre des Champs Elysees and Theatre National de L'Opera in Paris. Curator of the Hermitage Picture Gallery (1918-1926). Member of the Commission for the Protection of Monuments of Art and Antiques. Edited the Art Treasures of Russia magazine (1901-1903). Emigrated to Paris (1926).
